byStudents study subjects in different class-rooms, each designed specifically for the respective subject in order to best stimu-late their interest. Yamanashi Gakuin also considers the full six years of junior and senior high school together, thus offering more effective and flexible support for stu-dents’ future educational paths. Part of the approach to developing global academic skills is a personal project, in which each student develops a self-learning process by conducting ongoing research and analysis on one topic for three years.25JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLInnovative LearningEnglish Speaking ImprovementEnglish language education in Japan is characterized by a focus on grammar and reading at the expense of productive skills. However, through an abundance of practical activities, this school places an equal weight on all four of the key lan-guage skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. For instance, all students must go through intensive English training modules in their second year, fol-lowed by two weeks or more of intensive language training in Australia in their final year.
