byThe Confucius Institute at Yamanashi Gakuin University was jointly established with Xi’an Jiaotong University in China to implement new educational services, and it has helped the global education at Yamanashi Gakuin to continue to evolve. The Confucius Institute is a non-profit public educational organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China that is aimed at promoting Chinese language, and cul-tural exchange and cooperation between China and Japan. The rapid growth of China’s economy and exchanges with the world in recent years has resulted in increased demand for Chinese language learning programs around the world. The Confucius Institute program was original-ly founded in 2004, and operates in co-operation with local affiliate colleges and universities around the world. The program is overseen by Hanban (Office of Chinese Language Council Interna-tional), whose mission statement is to be committed to making Chinese language and culture teaching resources and ser-vices available to the world, to meet the demands of overseas Chinese learners to the utmost, and to contribute to the for-mation of a world of cultural diversity and harmony. In addition to Japan, Con-fucius Institutes have been opened in over 500 schools and universities throughout Asia, Africa, North America, Central America, South America, Europe and Oceania. The Confucius Institute at Ya-manashi Gakuin University offers Chi-nese language courses to organizations relating to Yamanashi Prefecture, as well as to individuals who wish to learn Chi-nese, and aims to implement multifaceted cooperation and cultural exchanges through education, culture and business relating to China and Japan.19CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE
